International Economic News: Brazil May Cut Rates Third Month; Inflation Concern Grows

Brazil may reduce lending rates for a third month as the central bank seeks to boost the flagging economy at the risk of fueling inflation.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is under pressure from union leaders and businessmen to stimulate the economy at a time when high oil prices and a weakening currency threaten to spur inflation.

Economists predict the President's response to this pressure will be a further reduction in overnight lending rates of 25 to 50 basis points at the next meeting of the central bank. While this certainly may help boost economy it also raises concerns about inflation and quickly rising prices. Regardless, at with 7 out of 8 months of benchmark lending rate reduction and not much economic stimulus it is very likely that a further reduction will be seen.
